Keeping one's reputation under control is one of the most important thing in running for government. This is because the people of the United States will only vote for who they feel is trustworthy and truthful to them. Because of this, politicians seem to hide or come out with a plentiful amount of information from their past during the elections. Politicians have different views on how to let these past moments out. It's important for the politicians to be truthful to the U.S. citizens, because if they're not it will all spill out eventually.

Jimmy Carter used his inexperience as a lawyer and lack of appearance in the Washington scene as an asset to help his presidency. Carter knew that his opponents could use these things against him so he decided it was best to turn them into a good thing. He used them as examples of how he's different from the average president, because the people were becoming more flexible. Because he brought up his problems as assests, the people had nothing to question.
Spin
The example given in the book is about Bill Clinton. He came in second in the debate in New Hampshire but never looked at the negative side. He went on tv and acted as if he didn’t lose. He ignored all of the negative press and got the people to listen to him and accept him. He was then calledthe “Comeback Kid.”
Real life examples:
An example of someone taking this initiative now is Obama admitting to using drugs. Obama admitted to using drugs and says it was part of being a teenage boy; a teenage boy who was confused. It was best for him to admit this and say it was something of his past than have news blow it up by saying things like, “Obama, past cocaine addict”. In this situation Obama was owing up to his mistakes before anyone else could tell it to the public and make it more than it is.
Obama hangs a lantern on his past and admits to inhaling. Skip forward to 51 seconds.
The press found out about David Vitter’s sex scandal and he spun it around to make people ignore it. He made the negative into more positive. He is still in office today. David Vitter and wife at the conference where he admits and apologizes for his sex scandal.
